“Yes: I am a dreamer. For a dreamer is one
who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the
dawn before the rest of the world.”
~ Oscar
Wilde
The painting is an acrylic on a 9x12 canvas. Originally inspired by the writtings of Master Zhuangzi, a Chinese philosopher and
mystic, Zhuangzi puzzled over the nature of experience. After awaking from a
vivid dream Zhuangzi could not distinguish between waking and dreaming
life.
Zhuangzi dreamt that he was a butterfly, fluttering through
a garden. He forgot that he was man. When he awoke, he remember that he was a
man. As the memory of being a butterfly flittered away, he became confused and
uncertain. Zhuangzi wondered to himself; Am I a man who dreamt he was a
butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that it was a man.
When we considered only our experience, it becomes hard to
differentiate between our dreams and our reality. I reckon that there is no
need to divide them up. Success is found when we bring our dream and reality
together. So, I painted a few butterflies.
